Pegasus Class - Reception

Welcome to Reception's Webpage!

Our Reception Class are taught by Miss Basche, Mrs Carter, Mrs Riaz and Mrs Nawaz.

The curriculum is creatively planned following the Development Matters framework. Exciting topics hook the children into their learning. Our pupils are happy, independent and make good progress. The children’s gaps in learning are carefully tracked and individual children's needs are identified to ensure provision is meeting the gaps in their learning. There is a firm focus on language into reading, writing and mathematics. We also place a high value on the ‘Characteristics of Effective Learning: independence, perseverance, motivation and critical thinking.’

The children’s receptive language is assessed using WellComm and HANEN. Where gaps are found, intervention meets their needs. Early writing skills are fostered using the whole school approach to handwriting KINETIC Letters. KINETIC letters is an innovative approach that progressively refines handwriting by building strength and stamina, beginning with gross motor skills, building core strength and developing the correct pencil hold.

Reception are taught phonics through Read, Write Inc. Reading is a strong focus concentrating on decoding green words, learning sight recognition by reading red words and developing comprehension skills. Read Write Inc supports Reception children to read the sounds in words using Fred Talk and sound blending as well as the corresponding letters/letter groups.
Read Write Inc supports children to develop their sound blending skills with a range of story books and non-fiction books matched to their phonic ability. Children also develop their comprehension skills in stories by answering 'Find it' and 'Prove it' discussion questions.
Children are always actively involved in Read Write Inc lessons through 'My Turn, Your Turn', as well as partner work to ensure children answer every question, practise every activity through playing the role of 'teacher' and taking turns to read in their pairs.

In mathematics, Reception use the similar methods as the rest of the school. Strategies using ‘Singapore Maths’ and Maths Mastery methods enable the children to grasp early number skills, understanding and mathematical language which is supported by White Rose curriculum coverage.

Reading, Writing and Arithmetic are offered daily via focused activities when children are given the opportunity to practise their skills and develop their understanding, specific to each child's needs. Continuous provision ensures all the pupils are given the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge throughout all areas of the curriculum.  This provision again, enables pupils to access a range of language suitable across a range of subjects. Children are encouraged to speak in full sentences using an increasingly precise vocabulary and tense. Positive learning behaviours and social skills are taught to enable pupils to enjoy their learning, together.

All Reception children have the opportunity to access Forest School every Tuesday afternoon. The school is proud of its wonderful outside environment to encourage learning outdoors.
